Costume: Elsa Schiaparelli
Ovvero l'antagonista italiana di Coco Chanel. Sebbene l'una crei abiti estrosi, dalle fantasie più svariate e dallo stile decisamente più femminile e l'altra cerchi di rendere la figura femminile sempre più semplice e comoda nella sua eleganza, entrambe vogliono rendere la loro donna indipendente e libera di indossare ciò che preferisce.
Nata a Roma nel 1890, Elsa (o Schiap, come la chiamavano a Parigi) decide di trasferirsi nella capitale francese dopo un matrimonio fallimentare e con una figlia gravemente malata. Qui ha l'opportunità di conoscere Paul Poiret, da cui trae ispirazione per i suoi abiti kimono.
Or Coco Chanel's Italian antagonist. Even if one designs imaginative dresses, with the most diverse patterns and with a clearly more feminine style while the other tries to make the female figure even more simple and comfortable in her elegance, both want to make their woman indipendent and free to wear what she prefers.
Elsa (or Schiap, as they used to call her in Paris) was born in Rome in 1890; she decides to move in Paris after a failed marriage and with an ill daughter. Here, she has the opportunity to meet Paul Poiret, from whom she takes inspiration for the kimono dresses.
La vera e propria ispirazione sembra che le sia arrivata da un abito a maglia di una rifugiata armena. E lei iniziò proprio creando maglioni neri trompe l'oeil, come quello qui sopra.
Nel 1922 riesce ad aprire la vera e propria boutique, in Place Vendome. E' in questo periodo che la sua fantasia comincia a sbizzarrirsi, grazie anche all'influenza del surrealismo. Crea abiti dalle forme mai viste all'epoca, con enormi animali come decorazioni, con fantasie mai viste e, soprattutto, con un taglio decisamente femminile che sottolineava un punto vita nascosto da troppo tempo sotto gli abiti portati durante la guerra.
The out-and-out inspiration seems to have got to Elsa from a knitted dress worn by an Armenian refugee. And she starts designing black jerseys with the trompe l'oeil style, as you can see in the picture above.
In 1922 she can open her boutique in Place Vendome. It's in this period that her imagination begins to satisfy her whims, thanks also to the surrealism's influence. She creates dresses with never seen shapes in the time, with enormous animals as decoration, with never seen patterns and, above all, with a definitely feminine cut that underlines a waistline hidden by clothes worn during the war.
E' chiamata la cappellaia matta, perchè crea cappelli di ogni forma.
She is called The Hatter, because she creates every shape hats.
Ed è lei a dare quel tocco di colore di cui avevano bisogno i vestiti dell'epoca, con il suo "rosa shocking", oggi definito "rosa schiaparelli".
And she is the one who gives clothes that colour they need during that time, the "shocking pink" that today we define as "schiaparelli pink".
